Birthday Fly Fishing on the Little Truckee River!
Cole and I went to Lake Tahoe for my birthday for some relaxing, getting away from the chaos of sirens and car horns blasting at every intersection, and some serious fly fishing. Ended up getting outfitted with a guide through the Reno Fly Shop. Our guide Tim Haddon is a California native, and an epic fisherman.
It was in the 40's in the morning, and the water was pretty freezing. Thank God for waders! After a quick lesson on the basics of fly fishing, Cole and I set out to catch some wild trout. Within minutes, C hooked up with a beauty that gave her a great fight...even if she doesn't exactly understand that concept yet. She let the fish do its thing, and before she knew it, she landed this beauty.
I was so happy for her that even if I got skunked, it would have been a perfect day for me. Luckily, that wasn't the case as I hooked up with 3 fish before days end. The next video is the first wild trout that I have ever caught on a fly rod. As you will see, the fish had VERY fresh bear claw marks on the side. Epic!
BEST DAY OF FISHING EVER!!

Lake Chabot, November 2008
On a recent trip to Lake Chabot in Castro Valley, Skinner and I caught a few nice trout that day. Headed out on a chilly morning, before the sun broke the horizon and rented a small boat. While trolling out to Half Moon Bay (Lake Chabot), I hooked up with a nice guy.
Skinner caught a beauty too.
Here are a couple pics.
(ps...we both practice "catch and release", no fish were harmed in these pics...hippies)

Wow...its been a super long time!
I haven't really written just cause I haven't really felt like it. A lot has changed in my life in the past 8-9 months. A lot of my relationships with close friends has changed as well. Some of them have gotten much stronger and continue to grow each day while others have fallen short of what I thought our relationships held. This is life.
In just a few short weeks, I will gain one more notch under the belt and turn 30. Its not a big deal to some, but its something that I am really looking forward to. Weird to actually say that since for the past few months its been bugging the shit out of me.
I am really going to focus on getting my shit together this year and take some huge steps next year. I think its time for me to shake things up again. I have a strong desire to get myself back to the ocean. I need to live somewhere that I can jump in the ocean with no wetsuit and surf on my lunch break. There is only one real place that I can think of...Cole and I are are currently talking about it...very seriously and within the next year we will be somewhere like that. Its gonna be a good year.

A little over a week ago, I was fortunate enough to travel to Maui for a couple days of relaxation and to spend some time with C. Although I have been to Maui and the ainas over 25 times, this most recent trip was one of the most memorable and special trips yet.
For 4 days, I spent as much time in the ocean as possible. I was able to get in at least 3-5 hours of each day in the water, and even rented a board to paddle out. The fact that C already knows how to surf was a major plus and we enjoyed small surf off of Lahaina. Just paddling and catching to stoke was epic.
This most recent trip to Maui convinced me that I need to get out there sooner than later and there is truly no place on earth like Hawaii!
(I can spends hours just writing about this trip but work is calling me!)

I can't believe that there are coyotes in Golden Gate Park!
WTF??? Since I have lived in SF, 8 years have been spent within 3 blocks of GGP. I had no clue that there were still coyotes in the park. Growing up in SoCal, we used to have coyotes all over my neighborhood, but I never thought they would still live in San Francisco!
I've been very inconsistent lately with keeping things updated here, but with Summer in full swing, I am going to do my best to post often.
I just got back from a 5 day trip to Los Angeles. Had my recheck swim and had to sit through an entire day of new procedures, protocols, etc...Regardless, it was great to get my toes in the sand, and my red trunks on. After the Recheck, I ended up donating blood in our annual blood drive and got a few of my friends to come in and do the same. DONATE BLOOD FOLKS!
Thursday events led to a busy and hectic Friday trying to get everything done that I needed to in order to work on the beach. Ended up driving through Los Angeles all day and running around like a chicken with my head cut off. Good thing it was only 100 degrees all day! Got to meet some bros and headed out for a swim and workout in the late afternoon. As we walked out onto the beach, a beach patron asked if we were lifeguards because she witnessed a girl that was "passing out" at the snack stand. Tyler and I went to the scene to find a 15 year old French girl that was severely dehydrated and suffering from heat exhaustion. There's nothing like working, when you aren't supposed to be working. We ended up helping the on-duty guards while the we waited to transport the girl to a hospital. Needless to say, without even officially being on duty, the weekend was off to a good start.
I also got to see my friend Mark and Emily and their son Jack and for the first time, I met Katie. She is 5 weeks old and already super cute. Some babies at her age can look like aliens, but I can honestly say that she was adorable. Great to see some friends that I wouldn't easily see on the beach.
On Saturday I worked Torrance beach, where there was some surf and grips of heads at the beach. Made several "wet prevents" and had to splint up a guy with a pretty gnarly broken arm.
Sunday was at 2nd Street Hermosa Beach where it felt like a busy 4th of July instead of a casual Sunday. Didn't have to hit the water, but had to make several preventions and was on my feet all day. Ended up running around the entire South Bay trying to wrap up some loose ends before I had to jump in my car for a 7 hour drive home. About 4 hours into my drive, traffic came to a sudden, screeching stop. An accident occurred about 30-40 cars in front of me, but it blocked the entire I-5 northbound lanes. With no place to go, everybody turned off their engines and the highway became a parking lot for over an hour. Having my binoculars with my rescue equipment, I checked out the scene from a distance and can tell immediately that the accident was severe. After about 1.5 hours of not moving, the CHP finally diverted traffic through the center divide to get around the accident seen. Unfortunately, it was a fatal accident and the horror of the scene will leave a lasting impression on me for the rest of my life.
Although I didn't get home until the early morning hours today, I can truly say that I had an EPIC weekend and anytime I get to work on the beach is a good day!

The Police....
I saw the Police last night, and must say that it was an incredible show! Personally, I thought the sound was awesome (for a stadium) and the band was pretty tight for the most part. Sting still has his presence at the front of the stage, while Stewart Copeland still rips up the drums in the back. Andy Summers was simple on fire last night and the solos he took were fricken epic!
There's been a lot of talk of the band not being so good these days, but for some guys that took 24 years off from playing with each other, you could hardly fool me. "Don't Stand So Close to Me" was slightly lame, but to still hear the original group together and playing it was awesome.
Last night was some of the most straight up fun I have had in a long time.

BUSY AS POOPS!!!
Its been a little while since I have posted anything...mainly because my life is non-stop these days. Since my last post, I have gone to Phoenix, Yosemite, Vegas, and San Diego a couple of times.
Phew!
Non-stop. Tonight is kickball as well.
More importantly, today is day 60 of being a non-smoker. Pretty amazing...

Recent fires on Catalina Island...
Many people don't realize that as a Los Angeles County Lifeguard we do a lot more than just sit on the beach and check out hot chicks. Last week, gnarly brush fires ravaged through Catalina Island and nearly hit the small town on Avalon. The entire island was evacuated, except the emergency service people.
My friend Joel G. has been a Los Angeles County Lifeguard for over 20 years and took this picture while fighting the fires on Catalina...
Nice work guys!

Time to introduce you all to someone...
C...we met on Sutter and Stockton.
She's fantastic and I am for the first time in a very long time, totally and completely stoked about a situation like this.
So..now to intro you all to the best thing ever...C!
Just got back from Regina Spektor at the Warfield. We really had a blast! There is something to be said about having the best seats in the entire venue. Lower Loge, Row AA, Seats 102 and 104...
You may recognize her from her recording for Weeds.

I haven't had a cigarette or a dipper in 16 days. I recently attended my first show without a cigarette ever and I have been to hundreds and hundreds of shows. I recently realized that I don't wheeze or get out of breathe easily.
I don't smell like horrible stale cig smoke everyday. My breathe doesn't stink all the time.
Its still tough and gnarly, but I am done with tobacco forever.
ew.

Its been 4 days now without a single drag from a smoke. I can't believe that I have made it this far. Some of you may think that 4 days doesn't seem like a long time. Ha! It feel like its been at least a few lifetimes since my last drag.
I don't miss it though. That shit is horrible. I am glad to be tobacco free for the past 4 days...I hope to never smoke another cigarette again.

Tracy Morgan plays Tracy Jordan on the show, and he is hysterical.

An old friend...
I just opened an email from an old friend. She currently lives in Hawaii, happy as pie with her husband and she sounds like she is full of stoke. Unfortunately, she wrote because she wanted me to know that a mutual childhood friend of ours passed away recently. I am simply devastated and can't believe that Ronnie is gone.
When we were kids, Ronnie was the fastest kid around. He was a true natural talent, and brilliant at the same time.
He attended Cornell with a full scholarship and was an excellent Water Polo player as well. While attending Cornell, Ronnie encountered some difficult times that nobody could ever see coming.
I don't have any details about his passing, and its not my style to write about my super personal life, but I am extremely sad right now.
F!

SHUT UP AND SING!
This trailer is for the movie, Shut Up and Sing, a documentary about the Dixie Chicks.
I actually am a big fan and once again admit my ()ness, but seriously, they are great performers and a band I can't wait to see live. I have a wide taste in music, but I never expected to like these girls.
This movie is a MUST SEE!

A letter to my friends...(easties)
Dear Easties,
I finally arrived back in SF, after a pretty sketchy flight back. I wanted to take the time to just let each and every single one of you know, that this past trip to NYC/Jersey goes down in the books as one of the best.
Since you all already know what a () and sap I can be, I wanted to let you know that this weekend really made me realize how fantastic of a crew I have back east as well as out west.
Jersey rocks!
The party on Saturday was a blast, and the one-on-one time I had with all of you, meant the world to me. I really miss you guys a lot, probably more than you know.
Much love,
JP

Dear Michael Waltrip...You are a douchebag too...buts its ok!
Michael Waltrip has recently been caught cheating. During inspection prior to Qualifying for the Daytona 500, he was caught with an "oily substance" in one of his intake manifolds. After the manifold was shipped to a private lab in Charlotte, North Carolina, headquarters to NASCAR, it was discovered that this substance was like the stuff you can find in "Sterno".
Its likely that Waltrip didn't know this was going on, but he was the lead spokesperson for Toyota coming to NASCAR. He also is a two-time champion at the Daytona 500, which gave him a good shot even if it were with a brand new team.
The VP of Racing for Michael Waltrip racing was ejected, as well as Michael's crew chief. Both are out indefinitely which sucks for MW. His crew chief was also fined $100,000. Toyota is not happy with MW.
Tim Hardaway is a douchebag!!
Tim Hardaway was on a radio show as and basically was a complete idiot. Ends up he apologized like every other celeb that fucks up, but whatever.
Fucking douchebag.
